MARRIAGES

At the time of his death, Henry’s wife was named Elizabeth and she was living.

Some references state Henry married Mrs. Elizabeth (Rogers) Hartwell Bolling , relict of John Hartwell and Stith Bolling, in 1727. If so, Henry had a previous marriage as daughter Jane was supposedly born in 1717.

Elizabeth and John Hartwell had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Richard Cocke of Surry. 66

Note: Some researchers show Henry married to Elizabeth Edloe. Troy Valos has Henry married to Elizabeth Rogers. Elizabeth Rogers is the mother of Elizabeth Hartwell (Boddie says “widow of Stith Bolling and formerly relect of John Hartwell.”

Henry Browne, died 1734. He was the son of (12.) William Browne and (13.) Jane Merriweather, He married (7.) Elizabeth ? 1727. Children of Henry Browne and Elizabeth ?

Captain William Browne, Jr., was executor of the will of his brother, Captain Henry Browne’s whose estate was settled April 21, 1742.

Captain Henry’s will was probated in Surry February 19, 1734 (Book 8 , p. 458). Same was as follows: (Abstract)

To wife, Elizabeth Browne, all the estate which she possessed at any time before my marriage with her, all negroes and other estate which she had from Mr. Bolling and her own acquiring till the day of our marriage, she paying all debts and legacies from Stith Bolling’s estate.

I give to my son, Henry Browne, six negroes.

To my daughter, Jane Browne, six negroes.

To my daughter, Elizabeth Browne, six negroes.

To my daughter, Anne Browne, five negroes.

To child in esse if it be a boy all my land in Brunswick County and all my land in Surry County near Burchen’s Island on Black Water Swamp and five negroes; but if it is girl, I give her five negroes but the land in Brunswick and Surry Counties

To my Son, Henry Browne, all my tract land in Surry Co. known as Spring Swamp.

To my wife three negroes at her death divide among my children.

I forgive the following people the debts they owe me, namely: John Bynam, Edward Harris, Richard Bennett, Sr., John Bell, Thomas Bell and John Andrews.

I give William Rogers, Sr. ten pounds current money and ten pounds credit in some store.

I give to Edward Harris ten pounds current money ten pounds credit in some store.

I give to all persons hereafter named a Ring to amount to 20 shillings sterling each that is to say to my wife and each of her children, Jane, Ann, Alexander, and John Bolling one and to each of my own children, Jane, Elizabeth, Henry, and Anne Browne and to the Child to be born, one apiece.

To my brother, William Browne and his wife and to all their children one apiece.

To my brother, Henry Edlow and his wife and to all their children.

To my sister, Anne Browne, one to Mr. William Simmons and his wife.

To Mr. John Simmons and his wife and his son, Hartwell Cocke.

To the Rev. Mr. Eelbeck and his wife and to Rebecca Edloe.

To the officers and each of the Troopers belonging to the Troopes which I have commanded a ring apiece to the value of tenn shillings current monty each.

To John Andrews and his wife and all their children a ring to value of ten shillings.

My will if any of my children died before coming of age or marry, their part divided with survivors except the land, which I would have descend as the law directs.

After all debts are paid remainder of estate to be divided among my children, Henry, Jane, Elizabeth, Ann, and the child to be born.

Appts. father, William Browne, and Brother, William Browne, Jr., to be exors.

Elizabeth is named in Henry’s Will as his wife and infers she was the widow of Stith Bolling. Some references state she was Elizabeth Rogers, widow of John Hartwell and Col. Stith Bolling. Stith Bolling died in 1727 and Henry supposedly married Elizabeth that year.

Previously married to John Hartwell and Stith Bolling. Possibly married to Henry Browne.

BIRTH:
12 Apr 1686 as given seems unlikely if Henry was born in 1699.

DEATH:
16 Aug 1727 is clearly incorrect as she is alive in 1734 when Henry wrote his will. It appears that it was Jane Stith whose will was proved in Surry Co.,VA, 16 Aug, 1727, and mentions her Stith kids.

MARRIAGES
Elizabeth had a daughter, Elizabeth Hartwell, by John Hartwell. Elizabeth Hartwell married Richard Cocke. In Henry’s Will he mentions John Simmons, his wife, and his son, Hartwell Cocke. Could Elizabeth (Hartwell) Cocke have remarried to John Simmons?
