SMITH, Meriwether, a Delegate from Virginia; born at "Bathurst," near Dunnsville, Essex County, Va., in 1730; completed preparatory studies; was a signer of the Westmoreland Association in 1766; member of Essex Committee on Safety in 1774; member of the house of burgesses in 1774 and 1775; delegate to the Revolutionary conventions of 1775 and 1776; member of the State house of delegates 1776-1778; member of the Continental Congress 1778-1779 and 1781; again a member of the State house of delegates in 1781, 1782, 1785, and 1788; delegate to the State ratification convention in 1788; died at "Marigold," near Ozeana, Essex County, Va., January 25, 1790 (sic); interment on his estate at "Bathurst," near Dunnsville, Essex County, Va. 551

Smith, Meriwether, statesman, was born in Bathurst, Essex County, Va. in 1730. He was twice married; first, in 1760 to Alice, daughter of Phillip Lee, and of their children, George William (q.v) became governor of Virginia; He represented Essex county in the House of Burgesses in 1770; was a member of the Virginia conventions of 1775 and 1776, being associated with George Mason (q.V.) in the drafting of the bill of rights and the state constitution; was a signer of the articles of Westmorland association, Feb 27,1776, which was pledged to use no articles of importation, and of resolutions of the delegate to the Continental congress, 1778-82, and member of the Virginia Convention, which adopted the Constitution of the United States. He died Jan 25, 1790 (sic).

Sometimes referred to as Alice Corbin Lee. Parents were, perhaps, Philip Corbin Lee and either Sarah Brooke or Elizabeth Fowlkes.

Alice Lee was the daughter of Philip Lee and his second wife, Elizabeth Sewell. 1st marriage to Thomas Clarke. They had daughter Alice Lee Clarke who married John Roger Clarke. 2nd husband, Meriwether Smith. Their son was George William Smith, Governor of Virginia.
