227. In General Court 26 Oct 1693 a patent was ordered for Francis and issued on 20 Apr 1694. On 30 Nov 1695 Francis traded the patent with David Catlett and Francis’ wife Mary signed a Release of Dower. This indicates that Francis and Mary married prior to 1 Nov 1695. Francis sold his Island House plantation on 1 Jun 1695 and since Mary did not sign a release of dower, it appears he was still single at that time.

None of the documents for the sale of the Island House mention Mary and there is no known release of dower from her. The deed dated 21 October 1695 does guarantee Sherwood that the property is conveyed to him without dowers. Articles of Agreement are seen infrequently. In this instance the agreement could be to avoid “dower rights” for this property in a forthcoming marriage since Francis would not “own” the property after the date of the agreement. Selling the property out right would have required General Court approval since the land was probably entailed and the next court was not until October.

229. In Henry Williamson's will dated 30 Mar 1699 he refers many times to his daughter Elizabeth but never indicates that she is married. In Capt. Edward Thomas's will dated 22 May 1699 he refers to Elizabeth as the wife of Thomas Meriwether. Thus they must have been married between these two dates. (GMB)

However, Nicholas supposedly wrote a will in Hanover County, dated 4 Dec 1738, which mentions his wife and a child not yet born. His daughter, Mildred, was supposedly born in May 1739, a year after the Bible Leaf date for his death. It seems likely that Nicholas died in 1739, shortly before his daughter's birth.
