30 shows a Thomas as the son of John Lewis and Katherine Griffin Fauntleroy and proceeds to show a number of descendants, starting with a son, William Thomas. However, there are several problems with this connection.
First, the will of John Lewis, husband of Katherine Fauntleroy, and dated 1788, probated in 1790, only mentions three children: son John, who married Elizabeth Howell Kennon, daughter Apphia, who married David Allen and daughter Sarah, who married Phillip Taylor. No mention of a son Thomas or a daughter Jane, as also shown by NHM.
Second, NHM gives a birth year of 1761 for Thomas and no date for son William Thomas Lewis, but his grandson, William, was born in 1780, when Thomas was only 19 years old. It appears that the 1780 date for William is accurate, so Thomas could not have been born in 1761.
A cursory examination of Rootsweb by TMSI finds that almost all the family trees listing Thomas and wife Sarah Hawley Harrison show this incorrect connection to John Lewis and Katherine Fauntleroy. One site states Thomas is actually Thomas Bongamon Lewis, born abt 1710 in Rosemont, Westmoreland County, Virginia, son of Surles/Searles Lewis and Elizabeth Linton. Thomas Bongamon Lewis married Elizabeth Harris, born about 1720. Another site simply lists the birthdates of Thomas and Sarah as being in the 1740s and does not give a father for Thomas.
At this time the Meriwether Society does not recognize Thomas as being the son John Lewis and Catherine Fauntleroy and he and his descendants are therefore not directly connected to Nicholas Meriwether I. If John and Catherine had a son named Thomas and a daughter named Jane, they probably died before 1788. Additional research on the deeds and other papers of John Lewis is needed to clarify this situation.
