William or Edmund Littlepage?
All Meriwether genealogies state that Sarah Meriwether, daughter of Nicholas Meriwether and Elizabeth Crawford, married William Littlepage and they had a daughter, Judith, born about 1731. This does not appear to be correct.
1. No records exist in Hanover county for a William Littlepage. Littlepage researchers claim no such person has been found.
2. Edmund Littlepage was born in 1712 on his father’s plantation on the Pamunkey River. Records exist that show that this property was directly across the river for the site of Newcastle that William Meriwether created on land he inherited from his grandfather, David Crawford.
3. A headstone exists for Sarah Merewether that states she was the wife of Edmund Littlepage.

Will of Nicholas Meriwether written 12 Dec 1743 first mentioned item:
To Granddaughter Judith Littlepage 459 acres in King William Co., VA over against my son William Meriwether's Plantation (if she died this land to son William Meriweather) and 11 negroes on the land (to go to sons William & David if she dies) and 2 negroes when she marries or arrives at the age of 21 (to go to grandson John Meriweather if she dies).
Land Patent Book 18, pg 170 (VGS) William Morris of New Kent patent 1, 840 acres on both sides of Dunkinghole & Golden Mine Creek. 20 Jul 1738 Of this 1,277 had been patented by Nicholas Meriweather 28 Sep 1730 and by him given to Edmund Littlepage by deed ack in Hanover Court and by the sd Edmund sold to sd William Morris. (Note: both of these transactions took place before 1734 for they are not recorded in the only deed book that remains for this period). Note: Hayden places a Edmund Littlepage as a Justice of King William in 1732, Lindsey Britton has checked the original records, and found him listed as a Commissioner of the Peace.
Journals of the Executive Council of VA, Vol 4, pg 267: 29 Apr 1732, The Following are added to the Commissioners of Peach for King William Co., VA: Thomas West, Edmund Littlepage, Joseph Temple, Humphrey Brooke, Matthew Maury and Richard Gregory.
Vol 5, pg 71: 17 Oct 1741: Edmund Littlepage, James ???, John Martin, Bernard Moore, Phillip Aylette, Nathaniel Claiborne, Phillip Buckner, Robert Campbell, are recommended to the Commissioners of Peace for King William Co.
In May of 1740, a bridge was ordered to be built across the Pamunkey by an act of the Assembly from Newcastle in Hanover County to the land of Edmund Littlepage in King William County. This bridge crossed the Pamunkey River on a part of the river formerly identified as the York River (Henning’s Statutes at Large of Virginia, Volume V, page 108). This shows that the lands of William Meriwether were directly across from the lands of Edmund Littlepage. Torrence finds that this lends weight to the argument that Sarah Merriwether married Edmund rather than William. Torrence found that Elizabeth Sutherland Littlepage Gregory (1794-1866) believed Sarah Meriwether was married to Edmund Littlepage, her great-grandfather.

Tuesday, March 10, 1752: A bridge was ordered by an Act of the Assembly to be built across the Pamunkey from Newcastle in Hanover to the lands of Edmund Littlepage in King William Co. (Journal House of Burgess 1752-55, pg 28).
Partridge Store Accounts (VGS)...He does not shop at this Hanover Co. Store, his brother John did, however several people had money paid to him on their account. Mr. George Norvell 1737 & 8 - pd Capt. Littlepage, Mr. John Mitchell 1738 - Pd Capt. Edmund Littlepage Capt David Crawford. Jan 1737/8 - Pd an order of Edmund Littlepage. After Thomas Partridge died in the settling of his accounts: 1743, A judgment against Edmund Littlepage in Hanover Co., VA.
Do not know who these people are but they might be some part of this family.
Estate of Robert C. Littlepage on the 1783 Tax List of King William Co - 1 Tithe, James Jefferson & 4 whites (females or underage males) and 19 slaves.
Edmund Littlepage (bc? 1765-71) appeared on only one year - 1790 tax list of Hanover and died by the bite of a mad dog, 8 Nov 1790 "in the bloom of youth". He had appeared on the Hanover Co., VA Taxt list only 1 year - 1790.
Edmund Littlepage, Jr. who wit the 1808 marrieage in Bath Co., VA of William S. Littlepage (son of William of Hanover).
Clayton Torrence, in his book The Winstons of Virginia and Allied Families (1927), gives argument that William Littlepge and Edmund Littlepage were one in the same person. He points out that, on March 20, 1682/3, David Crafford or Crawford received a patent for 1316 acres in New Kent County on the south side of the York River. The land was known as Assaquin (Patent Book 7, page 234). When Hanover County was created in 1720 from the upper part of New Kent County, these lands were located in the new Hanover County. By September of 1744, 400 acres of land of this patent, which had formerly been the home plantation of David Crawford known as Assaquin, were in the possession of William Meriwether, the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Crawford Meriwether. The town of Newcastle had been laid out on 40 acres of this piece of land.

Winston Cochran emailed me re data on the Littlepage Family within an email with all you folks.
My direct line = James Littlepage (1714-1766) m Sarah Winston (1733-1761) of "South Wales" their home in Hanover Co, Va.
I have made more trips to Virginia and Salt Lake than I can count. Was going last March but we know what happened then.
There has NEVER been a William Littlepage of that era.
Edmund Littlepage brother of my James littlepage was born at "Cumberland" in New Kent 16 May 1712 (Register of St. Peter's Parish) and was the 5th of 9 children born to Richard Littlepage, Jr (1675-20 May 1717 at Cumberland) who married before Nov 1702 to Frances (1677-21 Feb 1732 at Cumberland). Frances was NOT an Austin. Her surname is still elusive.
Edmund Littlepage married 1st: Sarah Meriwether born __ d 2 Jul 1733, leaving only a new born daughter Judith Littlepage b Jun/Jul 1733. Judith married 1748 to John Fauntleroy.
Judith died before 26 Sept 1752. On Motion of John Fauntleroy for administration of the estate of Judah (Judith) his deceased wife and the same is granted unto him - it is ordered that Thomas Granger, James Trice, George Dabney & William Dabney, first being sworn in front of a Justice of KgWm do appraise the estate of Judith, the sd wife of John, formerly Juda Littlepage. (Essex Co Records, Order Book 18, pg 191) She was just 19.
The Fauntleroys had two daughters:
Appia Fauntleroy b 1749 m Dr. Henry Todd
Sarah Fauntleroy b 1752 m George Neal Fauntleroy
Edmund Littlepage m 2nd and this wife and (should I say her boyfriend) were located in New York City. She also deserted her child, Thomas Littlepage (he did NOT have a middle name) born about 1740 & died 1786 in King William Co (as per tax records). His wife was Anne Terrell Burnley (1745-1813) - they had 8 children as outlined in a variety of chancery court papers.

Sarah Meriwether Littlepage (M125)

Sarah was probably the last child of Nicholas Meriwether II and Elizabeth Crawford. She married Edmund Littlepage about 1731 in Virginia. They had one known daughter, Judith, who was the first wife of John Fauntleroy (~1724–~1766).
Sarah died before the Will of Nicholas Meriwether II (1743) was written, but daughter Judith is mentioned in the Will.

Sarah was probably the last child of Nicholas Meriwether II and Elizabeth Crawford. She married Edmund Littlepage about 1731 in Virginia. They had one known daughter, Judith, who was the first wife of John Fauntleroy (~1724–~1766).

Daughter of Nicholas & Elizabeth ... 1st wife of William Littlepage (m-about 1718), one child Judith ... 2nd wife of Edmund Littlepage (m-about 1731), one child ....... Thomas Edmond Littlepage, Peter’s 5th g-g-father. Seems his mother Sara must have died when he was an infant. Her death was July 2, 1733, and his birth is listed about 1734, but I bet the July 2 date was about the same for both.”
TMSI Note: No Thomas Edmond Littlepage is mentioned in the will of Nicholas II. Judith [Judeth], however, is. This argues against the supposed second marriage of Sarah.
BUT…. Edmund Littlepage’s headstone at “Aspen Grove” in King William County has the following inscription:

Second, who is the husband of Sarah? For 200 years Meriwether genealogies have stated she married a William Littlepage. The problem is there is no evidence in the extant records of the time that a William Littlepage existed. And a few years ago a Littlepage researcher contacted us and confirmed that they believed that a William Littlepage did not exist.
So the other candidate is Edmund Littlepage and indeed a Findagrave Memorial for Edmund has the inscription “Sarah Meriwether his wife”.
This would match your entry of Thomas Edmund Littlepage as being a son of Edmund. I think the headstone also references a Thomas Littlepage; is that Thomas Edmund?
The next problem we have is that we know from Bible records that Sarah Meriwether Littlepage died 2 Jul 1732 or 1733:

We know that Sarah had a daughter named Judith, as granddaughter Judith Littlepage is listed in the Will of Nicholas II. This is the only mention of any Littlepage children.

Currently, we believe that Sarah was born about 1714 and married Edmund Littlepage (b. 1712) about 1731; they had the daughter Judith (b. abt 1731) and Sarah died in 1733. Any children born to Edmund after this date must be from a second wife, of which I have seen no evidence.
We are conducting the Meriwether Society Annual Meeting in Richmond, Virginia, in June 2024 to do research at the Library of Virginia and the Virginia Historical Society; one of the primary issues I am planning to research is the Sarah Meriwether/Edmund Littlepage situation. If interested, maybe you’d like to join us and participate?

Using Ancestry, I started to dig into my great grandmother and after a while, kept getting hits that eventually led to the Meriwethers. I do realize the further back, the less likely confirmed accounts are correct. But, as I researched the Meriwether name, there seemed to be better accuracy of the family connections. I’m guessing resources for this family are better maintained than others.
