Notes for Capt. Thomas Meriwether
Birth Year
Published records, such as WRG, have stated that Thomas Meriwether was b. 1708. [NHM] believe[s] the confusion has arisen over another Thomas Meriwether, son of William’s brother David. There are complications in the early records of three men named Thomas Meriwether.” NHM p. 430. see page for additional clarification. 30

Lineage and Residence

NMII's will and the deeds cited by NHM make it certain that Thomas was the son of William (M121) and that he was married to Jane Lewis, daughter of Robert Lewis and Jane Meriwether as late as Oct 1767 (the date of the deed that disposed of Jane's inheritance.) Two of the deeds in NHM were dated Oct 1766 and the other Oct 1767 - makes one wonder whether there was a transcription error. It would appear that Thomas and Jane were selling out and moving somewhere. It may be they had other land but they sold over 4,000 acres. It appears from the processing records that Thomas (known as Thomas Meriwether, Jr. to distinguish him from his cousin, Thomas Meriwether (M1221)) was living on his 2,331a Mountain Tract as late as 1764, so he was selling his home plantation. Did they go south this early? Should be some land records in South Carolina to establish that.

From Virginia Revolutionary Pension Applications by John Frederick Dorman

John Connelly, pension application S.30345, 18 Nov 1839, Nelson County, Kentucky

John Connelly of said county declares he was born in Virginia on 22 Aug 1757. In 1777 he lived in Fairfax County, Virginia, and on 01 Sep 1777 he volunteered and joined the company of Captain Benjamin Moody, Lt. William Daniel and Ens. John Hunter under Col. John Gilpin, Maj. James Wren and Col. Lumley. He served three months and on 01 Dec 1777 left the army and returned home. He rendezvoused at Alexandria, Virginia, and marched to Georgetown, Maryland, and then to Yorktown and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then on the Schuylkill River where they were dismissed and returned home.

In 1781 he lived in Loudoun County, Virginia, and in July was drafted for three months in the company of Captain John Linton, Lt. William Debell and Ens. Francis Adams under Col. George Summers and Maj. Risby who took command when they rendezvoused at West’s Town in Loudoun County. They marched to Malvern Hill where they joined the brigade of Gen. Stephens and where Col. Summers and Maj. Risby were released from any further command. Thomas Merriweather and William Hardyman took command in their place. They marched to the old magazine near Williamsburg, then to the encampment called Springfield, and there were dismissed and returned home in October 1781.

Marriage Evidence

Some accounts say that Thomas Meriwether married Jane Walker, but records exist which tend to prove that he married his first cousin, Jane Lewis, daughter of Robert Lewis and Jane Meriwether. The following excerpt from a land deed is proof of Jane Lewis’ marriage to Thomas Meriwether:

Albemarle Deed Book 4, p. 356, dated 22 October, 1767—Thomas Meriwether and Jane his wife--to Charles Lewis... for 225 lbs. (money) 1,000 acres—part of a tract patented by Robert Lewis and devised to his daughter Jane, wife of sd. Thomas Meriwether... by his last will and test. ...land bounded on the land of Sarah Lewis, running to Mary Cobb’s corner... thence... etc. ...to William Lewis’s corner... up to Mechums River... deed signed by Thomas Meriwether and Jane Meriwether... witnessed by Mary Cobbs, Nicholas Lewis, Alex. (X) Glasby, and Charles Lewis.

Other deeds in Book 4 show Thomas & Jane selling lands there that were inherited by Thomas Meriwether—particularly a piece from the late Richard Meriwether... (a son of William).

Albemarle Deed Book 4, p. 397, Oct. 27, 1766. Thomas Meriwether & Jane his wife to Thomas Walker… 2,331 acres in Albemarle… north side of the lands of Richard Beale, James Meriwether and John Sutton… south side of lands of John Walker purchased of John Lewis… said lands were granted Nicholas Meriwether by patent… and by him devised to the sd. Thomas Meriwether, etc.

Robert Lewis' will also makes clear that his daughter Jane was married to a Meriwether (doesn't say it was Thomas) which indicates, but does not prove, that Jane and Thomas were married by 1 September 1757, the date of the will.
