Notes for Thomas Meriwether
BIRTH
While some researchers have reported that Thomas was born in 1704, a number of facts prove he was born after 10 Jan 1709/10. First, Thomas’s uncle, Thomas Meriwether [M15], wrote his will on 7 Jan 1708/9 and stated that his brother Francis [M13] had no male children at that time. When Thomas [M135] wrote his will on 10 Jan 1730/1, he claimed no land. As the only male heir to Francis, he would have inherited “Bathurst” when he came of age, so this indicates he had not come of age 10 Jan 1730/1. Finally, there are two deeds (Essex Co. DB 20, pp. 39-43 & pp. 433-438) which contain the words “The sd Thomas dying under the age the Land descended….”

The will was first presented to a Court in Essex county on 16 Mar 1730/1, indicating that Thomas died between 10 Jan and 16 Mar 1730/1 and was not yet 21 years old. 681
