Research notes for Sarah Ann Royall
!MARR From notes by LEC, citing correspondence from Mrs. Upshur T. Joyner of Poquoson VA stating that she found among her aunt’s papers the note that "Charles Hudson married Sarah Ann Royall, daughter of Capt. Joseph Royall and his wife Mary Eppes." LEC has not been able to substantiate this.

Charles Hudson
Charles Hudson was born and raised in England. After his marriage he came to the Colonies, where he became a wealthy merchant of Hanover Town, VA. He was one of the earliest patentees of land in the wilds of Albemarle county. His first entry was made in 1730 on the Hardware, below Carter’s Bridge, for two thousand acres, and for the next three years he obtained grants for 1,600 more in the same locality. It embraced Mt. Air, which was one of the seats of the Hudson family for more than a hundred years. (History of Albemarle County, by Woods, p. 230)
In 1735, he took out a patent for 2,000 acres on Ivy Creek, southwest of Ivy Depot, which he sold two years later to the elder Michael Woods. It is almost certain he never lived in Albemarle himself. (From LEC, no source cited)
A George Hudson was inspector of Tobacco of Hanover Co. His daughter Elizabeth married Rev. John Clay and Henry Clay was their son. George was either Charles' brother (W. F. Thompkins V(Q)184, Gen. VA Families) or nephew (LEC research - son of John, brother of Charles).

Research notes for Charles (Spouse 1)
^NOTE ** Thompkins also states that "Charles Hudson’s daughter married young Warthen, who came from England with them. It was their daughter who married John Farrar. I think George and Charles both married Jennings, before leaving England." This implies a daughter other than Elizabeth and weakens the link to the Royall family. But the use of Eppes name with Charles' grandsons supports the Royall-Eppes connection.
