Richard Merywether was from Bensington (aka Benson), also in Oxon about 12 miles southeast of Oxford via A432 and on the River Thames. The family here may go back to the early 1400s. Richard’s father was also named Richard. In his 1592 will he made the son Richard executer of his will and mentioned that the son was in Burford. The will ran into problems when the probate judges did not approve the will “… on account that the executor, named in the said will, renounced the church and execution of the same …” This was resolved but, gives a clue as to the stubborn character of John’s father.

Richard moved to Burford in 1587 or perhaps a few years earlier. In his early days he was very active in politics and was referred to as a yeoman (or farmer). He served as Burgess, Bailiff, Alderman and trustee. As time went on, he got more involved in real estate and was called a mercer (cloth or dry goods business). It was said “… at the other end of the century Richard Merywether stands out as one successor of Simon Wysdom,” the major figure in Burford during the second half of the 16th century

His wife or wives are not known but they had at least four boys and three girls. John appears to be one of the younger boys.

Birth Order of Children

In a sale document dated 1621 Samuel is described as the heir apparent of Richard Merryweather of Burford, indication he was the oldest male child of Richard. The sequence of the rest of the children is a guess, though the marriage dates of Ann and Frances imply they may have been born around 1600 or probably before.
