Charles was an alternate for Thomas Jefferson as delegate to the Virginia Convention 17 July to 9 August 1775; and in sessions starting 1 December 1775 & 6 April 1776.
Signer of Letter of Religious Dissent with others from the area November 1776, this in reference to religious freedom and protest against state “established” religion.

Military Service, American Revolution
Chosen Captain of 1st Volunteer Company of Albemarle County, 1775. They marched toward Williamsburg to confront Lord Dunsmore over the gunpowder. With Col. William Christian led Virginia troops on Cherokee Expedition in 1776.
He was one of the first to offer his services on the outbreak of the Revolution. He was Captain of First Company of Volunteers, raised in Albemarle, then Lt. Col. of First Volunteer Regiment, Albemarle County, and later Col. of the 14th Virginia Regiment. His health failing, he was given a post in command of guards at “The Barracks”, a camp for Hessian prisoners near Charlottesville.
Commissioned by Continental Congress as Col. of 14th Virginia Regiment 12 November 1776. Led troops in battles of Brandywine & Germantown. Wintered at Valley Forge where he had to use own credit to obtain supplies for his men. His unit was often attached to Washington’s guards. Resigned his commission 28 March 1778 due to health. Appointed commander of Guards for the Convention Prisoners (Hessian Troops captured at Saratoga) 30 January 1779. They were to be housed in Charlottesville.”

Charles Lewis signed his will on11 June 1776 and it was recorded in May 1777. In it he named his wife Mary Lewis and sons Howell and Charles Warner Lewis.
