John Gillett and Augusta Smith Oglesby Professor of the American Heritage, Bradley University. The Oglesby Professorship was established by the late George and Edith Luthy in memory of her parents, John and Augusta Oglesby. The purpose of the endowed professorship is to encourage study of the American heritage and promote an appreciation of the growth and development of the nation's economy and political democracy. The first Oglesby Professor, Dr. Albro Martin, held the position from 1981 until his retirement in 1986. As Dr. Brune acknowledges in the preface of his latest book, America and the Iraqi Crisis, 1990-1992, the professorship provides ongoing funds for student assistants whose research help is "indispensable." 429
