CAPT. OGLESBY DEAD.
He Was a Well Known River Boatman and Railroad Man.
Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 9.—Capt. John Hite Oglesby is dead of old age. In his active day he was a well known captain of Ohio and Mississippi steamers, plying between New Orleans and northern ports, and he was born at Madison, this state, in 1811. During the war he commanded boats engaged in the supply service, and while thus employed one of his boats was burned, his son, William Oglesby, losing his life at the time. After the war he commanded the first fleet to make its way to the headwaters of the Missouri. He was also attached to the custom house at New Orleans for several years, then he went to railroading, and, as conductor. took out the first Vandalia train from this city. For nearly twenty years he has led a retired life owing to asthmatic troubles.
