Subject: Mary Weaver's parents

In earlier E-mails and a newsletter article we noted that we had found no records in Hereford county of James and Elizabeth Weaver, Mary Weaver’s parents, other than the baptisms of three of their children.

We believe we have now found the marriage record of James and Elizabeth. The parish register of Shrewsbury, St. Chad’s parish church, Shropshire county, reads:

10 March 1717 –

James Weaver of Leominster parish and Elizabeth Nickols of this parish, M.L.

The marriage bond and license return are among the records of Lichfield diocese in which Shrewsbury is located. The bond clearly states that James Weaver is of Leominster parish in the county of Hereford. One of the sureties besides James was Gabriel Nickols who probably was the brother or father of Elizabeth. Recall that Mary Weaver had a brother Gabriel who named William Merryweather in his will, so this provides further verification that we have the correct parents.

Unfortunately, James Weaver’s marriage allegation/affidavit was not found with the bond. That document may have given the ages of James and Elizabeth. The bond does not give their ages nor James’occupation or class.

Shrewsbury is on the Severn River about 33 miles N. of Leominster. The findings raise further questions about James Weaver, i.e., his occupation and why he was in Shropshire. Is it possible that he was a circuit-riding congregational minister?

Shrewsbury is a market and farm town with a 1992 population of about 43,000. There had earlier been considerable coal mining operations near Shrewsbury.

Nothing new on Captain David and Mary Meriwether’s family. If you would like copies of the marriage bond and parish register entry, please let us know.
