The name of David’s wife is unknown. Some genealogists have suggested her name was Jane, but there is no historical evidence for this.

David Crawford/Crafford
Just about everything published about David Crawford is suspect. Part of this problem was due to the fraudulent activity of one Gustave Anjou, who created multiple fake lineages for pay. The link to Kay Hayden’s Crawford site is highly recommended. In The Meriwethers and Their Connections, Heath Meriwether published the lineage of David back to the Barons of Runymeade as believed in 1964. This is not accurate.
He supposedly came to Virginia with his father, John.

Death
Many genealogies state he was killed by Pamunkey Indians on 13 Dec 1689 on his plantations, "Assassquin", in New Kent. However, vestry records of St. Paul's Parish clearly show he was active in the church there, last appearing as a vestryman on 3 Oct 1709. He did not appear at meetings in January 1709/10, March 1709/10 and 15 August 1710. At that last meeting, Mr. William England was sworn in as vestryman for the parish instead of Mr. David Crawford, lately deceased.

DAVID CRAWFORD was born 1623/25 in Kilbernie, Ayrshire, Scotland, and died 13 Dec 1689 in New Kent, New Kent County, Virginia. He married in 1654/56 to Jane ---- born 1633 in Virginia. Various spellings in legal documents have the Crawford name as Craford or Crafford. In 1667, David had 86 acres of land located in the parish of Martyn's Hundred in James City County granted by Sir William Berkeley, the Governor of the Colony of Virginia. The second grant of land to David was in 1672 for 1000 acres of land as "lying in ye branches of Mattadegun Creeke, in New Kent County" for having brought into the colony twenty persons. He acquired other lands: 1,350, 375, 1,300, 277, and 196 acres, most in St. Paul's Parish and St Peter's Parish in New Kent County or Hanover County.
"David Crawford belonged to the slave-holding aristocracy of the Old Dominion which so closely resembled the feudal nobility of earlier times." He certainly had Indian servants whom he said he had purchased. The way of life in Virginia at this period became very gracious for those who could afford it. Almost from one generation to the next, this class went from primitive shelters to homes built of brick. Mostly constructed of two stories, these homes had large rooms and high ceilings, large windows with glass to take care of the heat in summer. The kitchen and any other areas which were considered other than living areas were separated. So was born the southern tradition of the 'main' house surrounded by smaller buildings for cooking, washing, and dairy products.

His son David was born in Scotland about 1625, and was granted land in James Citty county in 1667. He afterward moved to New Kent and patented land there in 1672. David had known issue: (1) Elizabeth, born about 1650, married Nicholas Merowether; (2) a daughter, who married a Lewis; (3) Angelina, married a McGuire; (4) David, born about 1662, died 1762, aged 100 years; (5) John, died 13 Dec., 1689, and had a daughter, Angelina, who was baptized 2 Nov., 1689. I will always remain an associate member as I have no direct line to a Meriwether, only a collateral relationship. I descend from a sister to Elizabeth Crawford (abt 1675-1753) who married Capt. Nicholas Meriwether II (1667-1744). Elizabeth Crawford's parents, David & Jane Crawford are a set of 9th great grandparents. So many confuse this Elizabeth with her mother that I constantly need the latest research data on the Meriwether family.
