Will of Joseph Belfield

In the name of God Amen I, Joseph Belfield of Richmond County, and Parish of Lunenburg, Virginia, do make my will as follows, I resign my soul to God, my Maker, and my body to the Earth, and as for such worldly Estate as it shall please God to bless me withall at the time of my death (my debts being first paid) I give, bequeath and as follows:

I give to my son Thomas Wright Belfield twenty shillings, and no More. I desire my dear wife Elizabeth Belfield may have the us eof my Estate during her life and at her decease she said half to go to my sn Joseph Belfield, to who I give the other half of my Estate. But in case my son Joseph Belfield should die before age or marriage then my Will is that his Estate shall go to my Grand Children to be Equally Divided amongst them, and I do appoint my dear wife, my son Joseph Belfield to be Executrix & and Executor of this my last will. I renounce & Revoke forever all former wills. In witness hereof I have herewith sett my hand and seal this sixteenth day of July in the year of our Lord MDCCXXXVI.

The Richard County court records abound with Belfield instruments. The Bible record of Captain Thomas Wright Belfield (1 January 1704/5-7 December 1743) is in Judge L. H. Jones (Captain Roger Jones of London and Virginia, p.182-184 (Albany, N.Y., 1891). It is a typographical error in giving the death date of Capt. John Belfield as 19 August 1805 as his will was dated 26 May 1801 and proved at Richmond County court 5 Oct 1801 [WB#9,p.158]
