John's will names three sons, John Zachary Lewis, Robert Lewis and Nicholas Lewis.

^MARR **HEH & ZL1 state John married Mildred Lewis, the sister of Anne. ZL1 has a first marriage to Sarah Iverson.

3. John Lewis

The third child, in order of age, of Zachary Lewis and Mary Waller, was born October 18, 1729, baptized by Rev. Rodham Kenner, November 23, 1729, died September 12, 1780. Will dated May 31, 1766. Codicil added 1776. Admitted to record October 19, 1780. He married Ann Lewis, daughter of Robert Lewis of Belvoir. The Rev. Hayden says that John Lewis married, first, Sarah Iverson, but this is altogether improbable. John Lewis, son of the first Zachary, and uncle of this John, married Sarah Iverson, and this fact no doubt confused Mr. Hayden’s authorities. All of the circumstances preclude the idea of a previous marriage. Equally erroneous is Mr. Hayden’s assertion that John Lewis married Mildred Lewis, as the records and a letter preserved by his descendants positively prove that he married Ann Lewis, a sister of Mildred.

Mr. Lewis only had three sons, John Zachary, Robert and Nicholas. Charles Lewis who married Susan R. Waller and died in Lynchburg, Virginia, 1822, was not a son of this John Lewis. Nicholas Lewis, his son, married Ann Meriwether. Their children were: Eliza, James, Hunter, Susan and Laura Lewis.

While Mr. Lewis soes not ment any daughters, the records show, as explained on another page, that he had two daughters: Mary, who married David Wood Meriwether, and Jane who married Zachary Meriwether. (See Records of Spottsylvania.)

Seventh child of Robert Lewis of “Belvoir” and Jane Meriwether, married John Lewis (The Honest Lawyer), son of Zachary Lewis II and Mary Waller, born October 18, 1729, died September 12, 1780. His will on record, names his three sons, John Zachary Lewis, Robert Lewis and Nicholas Lewis. Another record adds Charles Lewis. Issue:

1. John Zachary Lewis (6).
2. Chas. Lewis (6).
3. Nicholas Lewis (6).
4. Robert Lewis (6).
5. Mary Lewis (6), married David Wood Meriwether and went to Kentucky.
6. Jane Lewis (6), married her first cousin, Zachary Meriwether, son of Mary Lewis and Francis Meriwether.

John Zachary Lewis, married, first, Miss Woolfolk. Issue: three children—Augustine, Ann and Bettie Lewis.
He married second, Elizabeth Brock, and had—John Zachary Lewis Jr.

Nicholas Lewis went West, all trace of him lost.

Robert Lewis, also went West, all trace of him lost.

Mary Lewis, married 1784, David Wood Meriwether, son of Wm. and Martha Wood Meriwether.

The family home for John and Anne was “Bel Air”, situated twenty miles from Frederickburg, VA. As of 1910 it was still owned by a member of the family. 578

On 19 Jun 1771, John Lewis and Ann, his wife, of Spotsylvania County, sold Lot No. 2 in town of Fredereickburg to Charles Yates. This land descended to John Lewis as heir at law of his father, Zachary Lewis. 577
