“Campbell says of him [Theodorick Bland] that he was a plain, practical man, with slender advantages of education, but a man of good fortune and character. Nothing is known of his education, but it is illogical that he should have not had advantages equal to his older brother Richard. Governor Faquier in 1758 appointed Theodorick as colonel of the Prince George County Militia, and he was also clerk of the county and in several terms, a member of the Burgesses from the county.” 525

On 16 June 1741, Theodorick Bland gave a bond of £400 to Francis Smith with the condition that Theodoric and his wife Frances would sell her share of “Bathurst” to Francis Smith when Frances reached the age of 21. On 21 and 22 February 1743/4, deeds and releases were signed by Theodoric and Frances selling the land to Francis Smith. This indicates that Frances was born sometime after 16 June 1720 and before 21 Feb 1722/3.

From "Extracts on the Bland Family from Bishop Meade," published 1858, it states:

“He (Theodoric Bland) married a Miss Bolling, descendant of Pocahontas, and had one son Theodoric, and five daughters, Messrs. Bannister, Ruffin, Eaton, Haynes and Randolph of Roanoke, father of John Randolph, member of Congress.”

Later in the same source, vol. I, pp. 79-80:

“The son of Pocahontas, Thomas Rolph, married a Miss Poythress. Their grandson, John Bolling, married a Miss Kennon, whose son John married a Miss Blair, of Williamsburg, while Richard Randolph, fourth in descent from Pocahontas, married Miss Ann Meade, sister of Col. R. K. Meade. Their daughter married Mr. Wm. Bolling, of Bolling Hall, Goochland Co., each of them being fifth in descent from Pocahontas.”

The DB has Frances' birthdate as 1724. As described below She and her husband were not able to execute a deed for half of the Bathurst property until she was 21. This happened on 21 Feb 1743/4 so she was born before Feb 1722/3.

a) To Francis and Lucy Smith: 295 acres “…one- half of the said lands as purchased by Mr. Francis Meriwether dec’d and Mary Meriwether his widow of Richard Buck (sic) with the plantation whereon the Honorable John Robinson Esqr. Now lives…” (The total of 590 acres consisted of items 14, 19, 21 & 23 in Table 8 – 2.) This land and the next remained with descendants of Francis and Mary until 1810. (See section on Bathurst House in Chapter 8.)

b) To Theodorick and Frances Bland: 295 ½ acres, the other half of the above 590 acres.

i) On 16 Jun 1741 Theodorick Bland of Prince George County, gent. gave a bond of 400 pounds of current money of Virginia to Francis Smith with the condition that he (i.e., Theodorick Bland) and his wife Frances will sell her moiety of the 590 acres when Frances reaches the age of 21. Smith was “permitted in the meanwhile to hold & enjoy the same without any Interruption.” Recorded 19 Jan 1741/2. [DB22 329 (Sparacio 85)].

ii) By deeds of lease and release dated 21 & 22 Feb 1743/4 Theodorick and Frances Bland of Prince George County soldFrances’ moiety of 295 acres to Francis Smith for £200 of lawful money of Virginia. Deeds recorded 20 Mar 1743/4.Frances release of Dower was dated 20 Mar 1743/4 and recorded 23 Feb 1743/4 in Prince George County and 20 Mar 1743/4 Essex County. DB23, 129 – 135 (Sparacio 45 – 47).

Colson has married in 1739, with children: Theodoric b. 21 Mar 1741; Frances b. 1744; Anna b. 5 Sep 1747; Elizabeth b. 1748; Frances b. 24 Sep 1752.118
