He settled in York, now Gloucester county, Petsworth Parish before 11 May 1646, when papers indicate he agreed to care for the cattle of John Liprot. He built a home four miles north of Gloucester Point and called it "The Hills" after his Yorkshire home in England. Late in life he lived in Stafford county.

Edward born 1646 Richmond VA, the son of William Thornton b 1620 Yorkshire England and died Cods Creek, Stafford VA 1708.
(Edward's  mother appears to be one Avice Russell b 1620 died Mar 17 1648, first wife of William Thornton). 

Edward Thornton had an older brother, Luke Thornton b 1642 St. Margaret's Westminister, London ENG who died Mar 2 1725 N Farnham, Richmond VA. 

Other children of William Thornton born 1620 ENG are issue from his second marr to Elizabeth Rowland.
