She was the daughter of Edward Garland, son of Peter Garland, the emigrant from Wales in 1650, who was of the Sussex, England, branch of teh Garland family. She was a sister of Martha Garland who married William Overton and also of Elizabeth Garland who married Capt. James Overton. 445

Ann’s birth year is not known for certain; records in St. Peter’s Parish, New Kent County, show:

"Anne Daugh. of Nicho Meriwether Gent. bapt the 15 July, 169_." 191

If we assume she was at least 18 when she first married, she was born on or before 1694.

She married, first, Thomas Johnson about 1712 and had issue. She is mentioned as “Ann, wife of Thomas Johnson” in the 1721 will of her cousin, Francis Clements, from whom she was bequeathed a ring. She is also mentioned as “daughter Ann Johnson” several times in the 1744 will of her father, Nicholas Meriwether II.

In February 1735, Ann was appointed the guardian of her children Richard, Jane, Ann, Thomas and William. In the same month she gave one Negro boy and three Negro girls to her son Nicholas.

Sometime after 1750, she married, second, John Cosby, no issue.

Ann died in March 1785, probably in Louisa County, at the advanced age of about 90 or 91.

Ann’s will was dated 2 Feb 1780 and proven 9 May 1785.

"Will of Ann Cosby of Louisa County dated 2nd. Feb. 1780, executors son Thomas and William Johnson, Proved 9th May 1785 by William Johnson Gent. Witnesses, Henry Ashton Johnson and Fanny Garth."

The Will states that the testatrix was a "person of advanced age."

Devises to "daughter Ann Boswell books and money enough to buy her a marriage ring.”

To my son Thomas Johnson my great Bible and my mourning ring.

To my son William Johnson all the rest of my estate except slaves.

To my grand-daughter Jane Wiley the labor of certain slaves til her daughters Ann Meriwether Wiley and Martha Jones Wiley shall arrive at eighteen years old.

“To my great grand daughter Ann Meriwether Wiley and Martha Jones Wiley” certain slaves "equally divided between them when the said Ann arrives at age of eighteen years.

Apparently lived across the South Ana river from Roundabout Castle, and died there.

She obtain a portion of her mother’s estate, as designated in the will:

Item. I do give & bequeath all the rest of my Estate to be Equally Divided between my Daughter Ann Cosby… to them & their heirs forever. 192

Findagrave Memorial for Anne Meriwether Cosby.

In my research, I found that Anne Meriwether was born in 1694 and died in 1785. As a widow of Thomas Johnson, she married John Cosby in 1750. John was born in 1680 and died in 1761; his first wife was Martha Garland. So, properly, Anne would be Anne Meriwether Johnson Cosby. I also have information from several sources that provides info about Anne's father (with correction in dates; I can share that later). Thank you.

ANN MERIWETHER was born on 15 Jul 1694 in Goochland, Virginia, and died ca 1780-1785 in Louisa County, Virginia. She married (1) in Virginia Thomas Johnson , son of Richard Johnson and (2) ca 1750-52 to John Crosby. Thomas Johnson was born 1694 in King William County, Virginia, and died 1734 in Hanover County, Virginia. In 1711 Thomas was issued a patent for 970 acres in King William County lying between the lands of the Gooches and Pamunkey River, which he possessed at the time of his death in 1734. Thomas was a Burgess from King and Queen in 1718, and for King William County in 1720-22. He was living at this time on his father’s estate, Chericoke, a tract of land, 750 acres in the parish of St. John, King William County at Pamunkey Neck. Thomas Johnson owned land in New Kent County in St. Paul’s Parrish on branch of Stonehorse Creek and on 5 September 1723 in Hanover County on Stony run.

In record books are the following:

1) Orphans Bond, 6 February 1734/5, Ann Johnson widow and David Meriwether Gent. and Joseph Fox of Hanover County are firmly bound unto Nicholas Meriwether Gent. first Justice in the Commission of the Peace for Hanover County as guardian of Richard, James, Ann and Thomas Johnson, orphans of Thomas Johnson, deceased

2) Deed of Gift, 12 December 1734, from Ann Johnson to her son Nicholas Johnson, a Boy Slave named Daniel and 3 Negro Girl Slaves, Sarah, Ester and Tamar

3) Deed, January 173/54, from Nicholas Johnson of King William County, to his sisters Jane and Ann Johnson

4) 26 April 1758 Ann Crosby gave to her son, Richard Johnson of St. Paul’s Par., Hanover Co. 14 Negro slaves

5) 26 Apr. 1757 Ann Crosby sold to Thomas Johnson of Caroline Co.

After Thomas died, she married in 1750 to John Cosby, born in 1680 and died in 1760. John’s 1st wife was Martha Garland (born 1690, died 1749), daughter of Edward Garland of Hanover County. John and Martha had 7 children, born between 1711 and 1722.

Ann Meriwether Crosby’s will, dated 2 February 1780, was recorded 9 May 1785 in Louisa County, Virginia.

The will of Nicholas II bequeathed Ann a plantation:

“Item, I do give and bequeath to my Daughter Ann Johnson my Plantation commonly called and known by the name of Roundabout together with Thurteen hundred acres of land to Her and Her Heirs forever.” 24

The name “Roundabout” is still in existence as the home of Anne Meriwether’s descendants, Mrs. Josephine Neal, Louisa, Virginia, who lives on and operates it in 1963 and whose forbearers have lived there since 1693. 105

In addition, Anne was also left 630 acres of land that were “bought of Edward Nix,” and the will further provided that after Ann’s death this acreage was to go to her son William Johnson. 105, 24

“Item, I do give and bequeath unto my Daughter Ann Johnson the land and plantation where she formily lived on the East side of the branch that parts it and the land I bought of Edward Nix being about six hundred and thirty acres, during her Natural life and after her Decease I do give and bequeath the said land to my Grandson William Johnson son to my above said Daughter Ann, and to the Heirs of his Body Lawfully begotten, and in case he failes of such Heirs, then I do give and bequeath the said Land to my Son William Meriwether and his Heirs forever.”
