Notes for John Henry Gaines Montgomery
John's maternal grandfather, John Montgomery, added a codicil to his will that if John would use the name Montgomery instead of Gaines, he would receive $500 from the estate. His brother, William, was to receive $250. Both brothers complied with these instructions.

This was due to the fact that with the death of Col Hugh Montgomery in the War of 1812, the sole male Montgomery survivor was gone." 216
