Biography notes for Peyton Samuel Head
PEYTON S. HEAD, the second son of James M. Head, was born near LaGrange, Oldham Co., Ky., in 1851. His father, James M. Head, was born and reared in Oldham County, a son of Zecrist Head, who came to Kentucky from Virginia and lived and died in Oldham County. Both were farmers, and James served as magistrate, and married Margaret McMakin, daughter of Peyton McMakin, of Nelson County, who was an extensive farmer, horse dealer and distiller, and who was awarded several premiums on his fine stock; he owned at one time 125 slaves. Peyton S. Head was educated at the county schools at LaGrange, and subsequently was in the employ of B. Wile, of LaGrange, in a dry goods store. Later he began dealing in real estate, which he has since followed together with other business, such as shaving notes and acting as assignee to parties failing in business, and was appointed by the court as special commissioner to settle estates. He is now a director and vice-president of, and the largest stockholder in, Oldham Bank at LaGrange. He was one of the originators of that bank. He served as deputy sheriff of Oldham County, during which time he was compelled to shoot a man in self-defense while making an arrest. He has also served as town treasurer, and at this time is guardian to several children. He owns about forty acres of land, and also valuable town property, consisting of eight or nine houses and lots in LaGrange. Mr. Head is still unmarried.
