Notes for Drucilla Dicena “Dicey” Townsend
"[T]he youngest daughter [of William Townsend], Drucilla, was first married to Meredith Carter, who lived near the Wilson Creek battle ground, and afterward to Jas. Kelley, with whom she removed to St. Clair county, Missouri" (Holcombe, History of Greene County). By family accounts, she and the children watched as Meredith Carter was murdered in his yard by bushwhackers during the Civil War (1864). I don't know how she met James Kelly, but he was involved in cattle drives to California, and so were Dicey's father and brothers.
Birth date: The birth date here is from her tombstone inscription, but it may be wrong. In the 1850 census, her age is given as 15, and in the 1860 census, her age is given as 24. This would mean she was born ca 1835, which would mean she was born in Missouri, and I imagine she was. She's known to be the youngest daughter of the family.
