Joseph Yundt died yesterday morning at a quarter past 3 o'clock at his residence, corner of Howell and Fifteenth streets. His death came after an invalidism of four or five years and was the result of the infirmities of old age. He had been sinking quite rapidly for some time, but rallied last week and his death came rather unexpectedly. He died peacefully.

Joseph Yundt was born in Baltimore, Maryland, March 14, 1811. He remained in his native State until 1835, when he came to Lafayette and conducted a general mercantile store. On June 18, 1837 (sic), he wedded Miss Mary Carpenter. To this union were born seven children, two of whom are deceased. Those living are: Mrs. Mary Tenbroeck, LaCrosse, Wis.; Jospeh H. Yundt, Kansas City; Rev. Samuel J. Yundt, Galena, Ill.; Mrs. J. E. Oglesby, Salt Lake City, Utah; James L. Yundt, Kansas City. Mrs. Yundt died January 14, 1853, and on November 28, 1854, he married Miss Emeline Perry. Born to this union were two children, viz: Mrs. George Bowman, Ft. Worth, Texas; Oran P. Yundt, Kansas City, who survive with their mother.

The deceased was one of the pioneers of Lafayette and was one of the first residents of Linnwood. He was a Republican in politics and served several terms as Recorder of Tippecanoe County. While in that position he became familiar with abstract work and pursued that occupation after he retired from office. Inherent honesty was one of his most pronounced traits and he never swerved from the path of honesty. He was an active and consistent member of St. John's Episcopal church and lived a life that reflected his Christian nobility and great integrity in every act. His life seems to have been blameless and his biography can be written at the grave, can be referred to in the future as a rare history of an honest life. To the bereaved household the JOURNAL extends its heartfelt sympathies. The funeral arrangements have not been made.

The funeral of the late Joseph Yundt will take place at 2:30 this afternoon from St. John's church, Rev. E. A. White officiating. There will be no services at the house. The pall bearers will be the vestrymen of the church: A. G. Carnahan, Wm. Garland?, J. P. Kile, Oscar D. Johnson, Lewis R. Thompson, Ralph Thompson, T. A. Stuart, R. B. Wetherill, George N. Foresman. Interment at Greenbush Cemetery.

VALUABLE FARM & Pleasant and Healthy Country Residence at Public Sale—As I am desirous to retire to the west, I will offer on the premises, on MONDAY, the 6th of July, at three o’clock, at public sale, the Farm upon which I now reside, being 4 1/2 miles from Baltimore, on the Frederick Turnpike. It contains 92 acres more or less, about 8 well timbered, the remainder under a good state of cultivation. Having on it a substantial Stone DWELLING, and suitable outhouses, including an excellent Spring House, with an oarchard of 8 acres. The situation is healthy, the Farm is in good order and well supplied with Springs, and under good fencing.

Parents

Research in 2008 calls into question the parents of Joseph Yundt. One reference states that Sarah, widow of the late Leonard Yundt, died 13 Mar 1857, aged 90. That would make her about 46 when Joseph was born. Daughters Ann, Sarah and Margaret married between 1805 and 1815; son Leonard Jr. married in 1808. It seems more likely that Joseph is the son of Leonard Jr. But in the 1880 Census, Joseph states both his parents were born in Switzerland; Leonard Jr. was almost certainly born in Maryland. And Christening record states mother’s name was SARA.

Note: Baptism record clearly shows Joseph was son of Sarah and Leonard, not Catherine and Leonard Jr. Siblings John (1799), Maria (1801), Rebecca (1807) and Samuel (1809) are all found in the Baptism records as children of Leonard and Sarah.

!BIRTH 1860 Census for Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana (FHL 80330 p107) has age as 49. 1870 Census (FHL 545861 p182) has age as 59. Both state he was born in Maryland.

!MARR St. John's Parrish Register, Lafayette (FHL 872188, 872189) and Marriage Records, Lafayette (FHL 849951 p57) identifies marriage to Mary Carpenter.

A Paul Yundt, 83 <1799>, died in Tippecanoe Co. in 1892. Could this be Jacob?

The first confirmation class of St. John's Episcopal Church was held in early January 1839 and listed 11 attendees: Mrs. Rebecca Eagleston, Mrs. Betsey Timmons, Mr. Robert Ward, Mrs. June Ward, Dr. Elizur Deming, Miss Elizabeth Jones, Mrs. Hester Deming, Miss Emma Jones, Miss Mary Carpenter, Mr. Joseph Yundt, Priscillia White.
