"I (Tom Shaw) left home February 18, 1878 at the age of twenty-two and went to Austin, the capital of Texas. I had ten dollars in cash, about twenty dollars' worth of clothes and a twelve dollar saddle." The name T. A. Shaw is scribed on the sandstone of Register Cliff along the Oregon Trail near the town of Guernsey, Wyoming, with a date of 1878. We believe this was made by Tom when he came up from Texas running a herd of about 2600 cattle for Coffee and Webb Snyder.23,1
