• PETER DOTY, was the fifth child of John Doty and wife. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, served as a private in the First Battalion, Somerset County, New Jersey Militia. He also served as a private in the New Jersey State Troops.
About 1778, he married Catharine Powelson, the fifth child of Johannes Powelson and Hermina Messler of Middlebush, New Jersey, who were members of the Harligen Reformed Dutch Church. She was born Sept. 11, 1751. The Powelson's came from Holland to America, landing at New Amsterdam, (New York City), Jan. 24, 1640. Some authorities claim they came from DenMark via Holland, which is probable.

According to the records of wills and deeds it has been determined that they lived in the town of Roxbury, Morris County, N.J.. Here their children were born and where the family remained until about 1796, when the two brothers, John and Peter, emigrated to Brooke County, Virginia, (now West Virginia) and lived nearly opposite the city of Steubenville, Ohio.3393, pp 9-10
