• ABRAHAM DOTY, the eldest child of Peter Doty and Catharine Powelson came with his parents from New Jersey when they settled in Brooke County, Virginia in 1796. Here he attained his majority and on Nov. 17, 1801 married Mary Barr who was born Apr. 25, 1782. It is said that he was drafted into the army during the War of 1812 but due to his family of small children was exempted from service.
After their marriage they lived in Brooke, Co., Va., until 1814 when they moved to Milton Tp., Richland Co., Ohio. where they lived for eight years, then sold and bought a farm about four miles west of Uniontown, now known as Ashland. There were few settlers here at this time and they had to endure many hardships.
The War of 1812 had ended propitiously and immigrants soon began to arrive in this region and the woodman's ax was heard early and late clearing away the timber for log cabins and their future farms.
Abraham Doty gave his influence and means in the erection of school houses and churches for the spread of education and intelligence among the rising generation and instructed his own children that intelligence, morality, and integrity gave all men influence among their companions and neighbors. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity and one of the pioneers of "Old Hopewell Presbyterian Church" of which he served as an elder for many years.3393, p 11
