His parentage & birth are a mystery which none of his descendants – many of whom were told he was a Royal bastard – have been able to solve. One can be certain that he came from a good Scottish connection & must have been illegitimate. The 1861 UK census shows his birth in Edinburgh in 1788 but this has no definite proof.5672, p 1
