• Was a miner in 1852 Sierra County, CA, and continued in that line of work until his death. Traveled from Illinois with his then wife, Narcissa Gailbreath and her family around 1851 and settled in Placer County, CA. They split soon after as he went to mining and she stayed in Placer County. 1870 census shows him living and working in Grass Valley, CA as mining supervisor. Appears he has recruited two younger brothers from Illinois to work and live with him: William Henry Townsend, b 1840, an engineer, and Samuel F. Townsend, b 1830, a miner. [7744]

• At 20 she [Mary O’Brien] married Mr. Clark. He was well connected. Clark Hubble, a nephew was head of pension dept. in Wash. [6, p 1, line 13] [Note: believe this family claim was an exaggeration of Clark Hubble’s actual position as Postmaster at Smithville, Placer County, California in 1863. [8214]

Clarke Payne Hubbell died yesterday in this city. He was a native of Michigan, and has resided on this Coast since 1852. He first engaged in business with W. S. Gage & Co. of Austin, Nev., and later with J. C. Hampden of Virginia City. In 1872 he took an interest in the firm of Wooster, Hubbell & Co., of this city, which firm was afterward changed to Hubbell, Shattuck & Co. He amassed a fortune during his commercial career. [7747]
