Clarke Payne Hubbell died yesterday in this city. He was a native of Michigan, and has resided on this Coast since 1852. He first engaged in business with W. S. Gage & Co. of Austin, Nev., and later with J. C. Hampden of Virginia City. In 1872 he took an interest in the firm of Wooster, Hubbell & Co., of this city, which firm was afterward changed to Hubbell, Shattuck & Co. He amassed a fortune during his commercial career.5376
• Death of an Old Merchant
Clark Payne Hubbell, a well-known merchant of thirty years’ standing on this coast, died at his residence, No. 218 Turk street on Friday. Deceased was born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1828, and came to California in 1852. He first engaged in mercantile business in Placer County, and afterward in Austin, Nev., and Virginia City, Nev. His business career in this city dates from the year 1872, when he went into the wholesale provision trade as a member of the firm of Wooster, Hubbell & Co., which, about a year ago, on the retirement of Mr. Wooster, changed its firm name to Hubbell, Shattuck & Co. Within two years past Mr. Hubbell has travelled extensively, visiting the East and Japan, in the hope of benefiting his health, which had been for some time failing. He returned, however, to California only to die from nervous exhaustion. Hon. Jay A. Hubbell, representative in Congress from Michigan, is a brother of the deceased. The Board of Trade, of which Mr. Hubbell was a member, held a special meeting yesterday and passed resolutions of respect and condolence.5375
