• On account of Indian depredations they [Crockett families] then returned east as far as Winchester, Va., and after collecting fresh supplies of stock and provisions returned to Wythe County, yet some of them including Hugh Crockett, and his father Joseph, settled on the upper or south fork of the Roanoke River in what is now Montgomery County. Joseph Crockett was born in Londonderry, Ireland, and married Jane DeVigue, daughter of a French exile. He died in the year of 1767 at his home in Montgomery County near the present village of Shawsville. [2158, p 28]
