• Riley Paddock and his young wife Eliza and their three month old daughter, Burella Jane, had arrived at Washington Grove near Lighthouse the latter part of March, 1837. Grandpa Paddock had come on horseback from Indiana the previous year carrying $1500 in silver in his saddlebags. He had been a storekeeper in a small town near Terra Haute, but decided to come and get some of the fine new land that Uncle Sam had just got possession of by unceremoniously pushing Black Hawk off the premises. He built a log cabin on his land, and set out early next year with his wife and young babe in a prairie schooner for their new home.10, p 15
