Individual Notes
• Gethings was a lawyer first in Quebec City, then in Montreal, and seems to have been descended/related to some notables of the time – MacPherson and Lemoines we think. I have several of his things, including his personal diary, an account book and some sketch books. I’m going to re-read the diary now that I know Anna’s name to see if I can find any reference to her. It was written when he was young and single, and there are great passages about walking on the promenade, skating, going to balls til 4 in the morning, and reading at his “club.” This is the same kind of world presumably that your great grandfather would have lived in – my great grandfather was only 9 years older than your great grandfather I think.5068
