Emma Oglesby Counts, a native of Illinois and resident of Ormond Beach since 1953, was invited to be the honored guest at the annual dinner of lifetime members who support the Gov. Oglesby Historical Mansion. The mansion, the former home of Illinois Gov. Richard James Oglesby, is in Decatur, Ill. Emma is the only living grandchild of the only governor to be elected to three nonconsecutive terms in Illinois. The former Civil War major general and U.S. senator, nominated his longtime friend, Abraham Lincoln, as the Republican candidate for president of the United States. The last photo of Lincoln, in fact, was with Richard Oglesby, and Emma has that picture. It was Oglesby who first called Lincoln the “rail-splitter,” and he was at his bedside when he died -- having been invited to be Lincoln’s guest at the theater the night he was shot. Emma makes her home with her granddaughter, Sue Thompson; Sue’s husband, Bert; and their children, Noah and Emma. They accompanied her to the dinner party last Friday in Illinois. The group spent a few days in the area and had an opportunity to visit with several relatives.
