He was a private, 2nd Regiment, Company D, from Washington County, Indiana, during the Mexican-American War. He mustered in on 20 June 1846 in New Albany, Indiana, mustered out 23 June 1846 in New Orleans, Louisiana, by Col. Samuel Churchill.
He was a Col. during the Civil War and was a prisoner of war, returning to the Union line with the aid of gt. Andrew B. Ratts, who was in a Texas regiment at that time bhad grown up with Attkisson in Salem, Indiana, having moved to Texas before the war. Sgt. Ratts was able to get food and a horse for Col. Attkisson. 13
