Introduction
Pictured above is my great-grandfather, Nelson Mills of Marysville, Michigan (1823-1904).

Presented in this website are my MILLS ancestral lines, and my wife’s MARTIN ancestors. Interestingly, both the Mills and Martin lines were Loyalists in the Revolution: the Mills removing from Westchester County, NY to Nova Scotia and a generation later to Ontario. The Martin line was also in Ontario (Lower Canada) having removed from Dutchess County, NY after the war. All of this presented rather interesting opportunities for genealogy sleuthing.

My grandfather, David Williams Mills, in collaboration with his brother, Myron Williams Mills, prepared a genealogy chart (Source #1) in the late 1940s which served as the starting point for our interest in genealogy. Their chart provided important clues to ancestors, but it provided no sources.

My maternal grandfather, William Rankine Eckart, retired professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford had, in the early 1950s, prepared meticulous draftsman-style genealogy charts (Source 8) of the Eckart, Mills, and allied lines. While beautiful and labor-intensive, they too provided no sources.

So with the challenge before us to confirm people and document sources, my wife, Gretchen, and I embraced the hobby of genealogy in earnest about 1985, working in mutual endeavor, and having fun doing so. We made numerous sleuthing trips together. Being Californians, and later Arizonans, as a couple we didn’t get to the east very often; genealogy hunting became an excuse to do so.

We recall one memorable day in 1989 spent rummaging through the basement of the Marysville (MI) Historical Museum finding original documents. We also spent many hours in the Michigan Room of the St. Clair County Public Library.

Key additional, interesting surnames include: ANDERSEN, BASS, CARLISLE, CONGDON, CROCKETT, ECKART, GORHAM, HAMILTON, HAY, HEMPSTEAD, McMORRAN, NETTLETON, O’BRIEN, SCHAEFFER, WALTER, WEBSTER, WILLIAMS. There are four descents from Mayflower passengers: ALDEN, BRADFORD, BREWSTER, HOWLAND.

All suggestions, additions, and corrections are gratefully received.
