• Samuel Doty, the fourth son of Edward Doty and Faithe Clarke, was the ancestor of a very large and influential branch of the Doty family, who from the state of New Jersey have gone forth as pioneers to the west and south. He spent a part of his early life at sea as did several of his elder brothers, but later years found him employed as a farmer. It is not definitely known just when he left Plymouth, Mass., but his trail was caught by old records at Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey, where in 1675, it is shown that he was commissioned lieutenant of the military company of New Piscataway, of which Francis Drake was Captain. This commission was renewed in 1678.
Samuel Doty lived to a greater age than did his father or elder brothers and his posterity have been noted for their longevity. It is gathered from old records that he was intelligent, industrious and thrifty; a man of ability and authority. The sterling characters of their children and their uniformly upright Christian lives show good training on the part of their parents, and that patriotism was one of the virtues inculcated is evidence by the service of his immediate descendants in the Indian Wars of 1756 and the Revolution.3393, p 8
