• His [Samuel Beach Axtell] grandfather was a Colonel of a New Jersey regiment during the war of 1812.4060

• b. April 5, 1769, at the old homestead in Mendham, N.J. He married Elizabeth Loree Jan. 9, 1791. He followed the carpenter's trade and carried on an extensive business. He had a large shop near his house, where he and his apprentices worked in the winter making doors, sash and blinds for the houses they erected the following summer. Among his apprentices was Jacob Tuttle, who afterwards entered the ministry, and whose son, the Rev. Joseph Tuttle, D.D., became president of Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind. Silas, like his father (the Old Major), joined a military company and passed through all the grades from private to Lieut. Col. He was commissioned Major in 1806 and Lieut. Col. in command of the 1st rgt. Morris Co. brigade Nov. 28, 1809. He retired in 1815. In Sept., 1823, in comapany with his wife and son Amzi he set out in a one-horse wagon on a journey over the Alleghenys to Ohio to visit their son Samuel L. On the road near Zanesville he was attacked by a fatal disease and died there Sept. 29, 1823. His widow married Nathaniel Clark in 1831; she died Aug. 9, 1851.5203
