• In 1724 he was called by the “Circular” Church (so-called) of Charleston, S. C., an invitation which he accepted and the pastorate of which he held for fourteen years until death cut off prematurely a most promising career. Through a friendship formed in college with Rev. Joshua Smith of Charleston he was received as an honored guest into the family of his college mate, the wealthy and celebrated Landgrave Smiths of South Carolina. As a result he married his friend’s sister, Mary Smith.3618, p 32
