• The Death of W. A. Kindred
[From The Sunday Argus]
A brief telegraphic dispatch yesterday announced the death, in Philadelphia Friday night, of Hon. Wm. A. Kindred of this city. The tidings carried a pang of personal regret and sorrow to every old citizen of Fargo.
Mr. Kindred was born in New Jersey about forty-five years ago. He came to the Red River Valley of Dakota as a member of the Northern Pacific engineer corps in 1870 or 1871, when this whole region was an almost unknown wilderness—a buffalo pasture and Indian hunting ground. He assisted in making the original surveys for the great railway which was the pioneer highway of Northwestern civilization.
He was one of the first to recognize the possibilities of the country, and to place faith in the destiny of Fargo. He was one of her earliest settlers, and from that time forward his loyalty to the young city he had helped to found and to build never wavered. He was an earnest and intelligent worker for every material interest of the city and the region. He was mayor of Fargo several terms, and under his administration many municipal improvements were planned and effected. He was vice-president of the Red River Valley National Bank, and was one of the original projectors and organizers of the Fargo Southern Railroad, and its vice-president. He was identified with many others of the leading business enterprises of the city and the state, and was also a large property holder in the new state of Washington. He was an active, enterprising public-spirited citizen, whose death is a public loss, a loss to his entire region. Mrs. Kindred and the two little children left St. Paul Friday night to join him in Philadelphia. It is pitiful to think of the bitter grief and disappointment awaiting them. In their bereavement they have the heartfelt, tender sympathy of the whole community. All Fargo mourns the untimely death of a useful and honored citizen.4912
