• Henry was the son of James and Eleanor Furlong of Belfast, County Wexford, Ireland [sic]. In 1792 he married Elizabeth, daughter of John Harrison and Sarah (Lovell) at Fort Cumberland (previously and since Fort Beausejour). When they died they were buried in their garden.
Henry had attempted to emigrate to Maine, USA, but was rejected. He landed in Parrsboro and took up property in Athol, NS. In 1805 he bought property previously owned by Francis Boss in Southampton. Probably in this spot, he built a travellers’ inn where “hospitality was dispensed with a lavish hand...travellers and early settlers gathered to quaff their punch and rollick round the flowing bowl...rum was a necessity, sick or well, in joy or sorrow...whatever their problem they gathered at Furlong House and drank, smoked and told yarns til day waned and night swept in, and the tallow dip shed its dim light on happy faces and still ‘mine host’ mixed the punch again and they all took ‘just one more’” (Historical Sketches by Ernest C. Coates). He deeded the land to his son James in 1828, who sold it to William Harrison in 1844 for £350.4393
