Research
She likely has two sons by a previous marriage, adopted by Charles Schaeffer. This based on Charles being single in the 1920 census and the age of the oldest son, Frank, 20, in the 1940 census.6979

• The 1940 census of Charles Schaeffer and wife Helen has me scratching my head. I contacted Jim Evers to see if he knew anything about Helen and her past, and this was his response in an email dated Sept 30, 2012.
As to Uncle Charley’s wife, I know nothing. Uncle Charley never said anything about his wife, who was deceased by the time I met him, nor did Helen say much about her mother except to say that she refused to have conjugal relations with Charley because he refused to convert to Catholicism. Of course, that must have been after Helen was born! When ever Helen talked about her father, she would say “he’s a saint,” and that she loved “Daddy” dearly. There was no mention of half brothers or even that her mom had previously been married. And to add to the mystery – as you now know - until Helen was a woman in her 50s and contacted Marylin’s mom, Frances, no one in the Schaeffer family knew that Charley was even or ever married. Whew, what a story.7025
