• Christopher Avery was the first of the Avery line to arrive in America before 1642. Leaving his wife, Margery, still in England, he apparently brought his only son, James, with him to Gloucester, Massachusetts. Christopher and James eventually owned extensive property in Gloucester but it was James who accompanied the Cape Ann Company to Pequot (New London) in 1650.
Christopher Avery received one of the earliest grants of the Pequot Lots from New London in 1653 that was located in present Ledyard. This land grant bordered on Poquetanuck Cove, north from “Coit’s Brook” (Billings Avery Brook) to the Preston line. This area is now known as Avery Hill. Eleven generations of Averys have lived and farmed on this land.2211, p 6
