Individual Notes
• According to family, Mathias came by ox team across the plains to California about 1851/52 and settled in Sutter Twp, Sacramento, CA. (Maybe he came with Frederick Walter?)4589, p 1

• CA land records indicate he homesteaded; Date: 1 June 1869; location: Solano, CA.4589, p 1

• The family moved from CA to Bonanza, Oregon [Klamath County] about 1872 and lived there until 1893 when they ‘sold out’ and moved to Winthrop, CA. Caroline died that same year and Mathias went on with his children to Winthrop. He moved back to Oregon and lived with his daughter, Melissa, until his death in 1917.
They owned the Walter’s Hotel in Bonanza for many years.4589, p 2

• Mathias’ obit and my family has he and Caroline with 9 children, 3 girls and 6 boys. The C. J. that is on this census is not one of their children, although at first I thought this was just a mistake and this was their second son, Charles. Have you found Christina Jane Walter, daughter of Frederick, in the 1860 census? Could this possibly be her?4591

• This Matthias is brother to Frederick based on the 1860 Census of Sutter Township, Sacramento county, and the presence and fit of C. J. Walter, age 9, b Iowa (Christina Jane, daughter of Frederick) in his household.4591
