General Notes
• There were many Holmes families in colonial New England, and it is a challenge to separate them from each other. Of the several Holmeses in Massachusetts, the story of one family, “The Descendants of Mr. John Holmes, Messenger of the Plymouth Court,” by Eugene A. Stratton, C.G., F.A.S.G., has recently been published in The National Genealogical Society Quarterly 74 (1986):84-110, 202-223. Of the three Robert Holmeses in New England, one was the Robert Holmes of Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1636. Another was Robert Holmes of Newbury, Massachusetts, 1660, and a third was Robert Holmes of Stonington, Connecticut, 1670 (James Savage, Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, 4 vols. [1860-1862; reprint ed. Baltimore, 1969], 2:451-454).
