• Nothing is known of Greenfield before he came to Saybrook where he bought land; he was a mariner and owned a sloop called the Phoenix. He married Phoebe Brown, widow of Thomas Lee, about 1647.3127, p 3
• The exportation of staves (not slaves) to the West Indies in exchange for sugar, rum and molasses was pioneered by Captain Greenfield Larrabee in 1650. Captain Larrabee came to settle in Saybrook from Boston and was one of the proprietors of the “East Side of the River.” Captain Larrabee was given command of the Tryall which was built at Wethersfield in 1649. The Tryall made its first voyage to the West Indies with a cargo of staves in the spring of 1650.3604, p 7
