• Whalers from Long Island and New England settled permanently on the Delaware Bay at Portsmouth (Town Bank), Cape May County, New Jersey, late in the 17th century. Later the site of the settlement was inundated by waters from the bay and the town was moved to higher ground.3375, p 45
