• Nathaniel lived with his uncle, Peter Mills, until he was seventeen years of age. He was an energetic young man and at the age of twenty-six had earned and saved $1,400.00, a considerable sum of money considering conditions at that time. In 1818, he with a number of others including the Lumleys, Clarks, Kings, and Lovel and Rebecca Harrison, left Southampton for Canada West, as Ontario was then known. They went by sailing vessel from Joggins, N. S., to Boston and spent a day or two sight-seeing. Nathaniel Mills bought a horse and light wagon at Boston and drove from that city to Albany, N. Y., and after a short rest, from Albany to Rochester. The surveys of the Erie Canal were then being made and he and others of the party followed the roads along route of the survey from Rochester to the Niagara River. After crossing the river they proceeded to Iona, Elgin County, Ontario, where Nathaniel secured land and lived for a short time west of the township line between Southwold and Dunwich and there married Rebecca Harrison, daughter of John and Charlotte (Mills) Harrison. About two years later Nathaniel bought land and removed to Palmyra, in Kent County. His wife died there of pneumonia about two months after their third child was born. Their first child, John, was born at Iona, their second, Mary, (Mrs. John DeCow) a most excellent woman, with whom the writer spent many pleasant hours in 1878, and third, Jane, who married a man by the name of Eastlake, were born at Palmyra, in Kent County. About the beginning of the year 1827 Nathaniel Mills married Mary Guggerty, of County Caven, Ireland, and there on March 1st, 1828, their first child, a girl, was born, and on March 18th, 1831, there was born a boy to whom was given the name of his great-grandfather, David, and who grew to manhood on his father's farm in the County of Kent; he was elected to represent the County of Kent in the first parliament that assembled at Ottawa after Confederation, was a Minister of the Crown in the McKenzie Government, a Senator and then Minister of Justice at Ottawa.2095

• I am a descendant from George Mills 1605 as well; where we differ is from David Mills and his wife Rebecca, where you were from Peter Mills and I was from George Mills ( - 1794). Apparently Nathaniel Mills hung out and moved with his uncle Peter though which is really cool.2891
