• Pomona, Cal., May 22, 1905.
I have just listened to the reading of the letters (which now number thirty-two) from the members of the Martin family. I enjoyed them very much. It makes me feel as if I belonged to quite a family.
I have very faint memories of my dear mother (who was the only daughter of John and Annis Martin). I enjoy single blessedness although I am nearly as often called Mrs. as Miss here. I find my brother as much of a family as I can manage. I fear I never could care for as numerous a family as Cousin Lillian has.
We have a pleasant little home here in this “Land of sunshine and flowers.” I invite you one and all to visit us. I promise to treat you all to oranges provided the crop holds out.
Affectionately yours,
Lillie E. Earl
