Individual Notes
• Ruth spent most of her life working as a “mother’s helper,” helping families care for their children. She spent over 30 years raising children for two families. Ruth says she enjoyed being a Mother’s Helper as she loves children. The hardest part was when the children grew up and moved away, but many still keep in contact with Ruth. Ruth has been at Abbington House since September 1976. She enjoys reading and clipping coupons for the staff. Ruth says she finds it a “gratifying and satisfying way to help those who help her.”1205
• Received March 13, 1991:
Thank you note to “Dear good Christian folks” for our 1990 Christmas letter. “’Tis a joy to read & reread your words...I’m still answering Xmas & birthday card; late answering yours; thanx thinking about me.”

Dear folks –
I’m truly glad I heard from u last Xmas,
thanx for your Xmas message.
Aug 2 – Sounds that you like the part of Africa you go to.
Changes here, & some queer elderly folks, we watch and pray.
I’m still coping with my sprained legs at times, hurts so cling to my bed & wheelchair, can get to the dining room to eat, & sort coupons for folks (workers here) food is hi.
I can’t walk so with prayer Numbers 6:24 I seem to have goodness.
Still live to reminiscence being with Aunt Minnie, & family; & my folks & children, in Park Ridge.

Have been to hospital several times for X rays, nothing broken; legs sprained & hurt. Have to go again, Nov. all were nice to me.
• Received note from her dated January 25, 1993, thanking us for our Christmas message. “We here had a good Xmas & hope everyone did too, plus more. I still can’t walk because of sprained legs & feet – however, ‘tis a little better, live in my wheelchair. Take care! Best always.”
• Received Christmas card, 12/21/1994:
“Faithful friend. Nice to hear from you again.

• Dear Gretchen & Dave
I am sorry to tell you that my Aunt Ruth died last April - I have enclosed the memoriam card. She suffered a stroke about two weeks prior to her death. She passed very quietly and in no pain.
I am her brother Fred’s daughter, Jean, and I have been visiting her all the years she had been in the home.

• I got to meet my Aunt Ruth 3 times before she died. She lived in a nursing home at that time. She had actually been there 17 years before she died. She had never married and had been a nanny all of her life, as you probably know. She was quite strange.1206
