Dear Will and Estelle,
Your good mother has told you of the sorrow that has come upon us so suddenly and in the moment of great happiness to all of us.
Sunday morning, two weeks ago, I was with Edna most of the time. I did certain slight services for her which I had promised but had been prevented doing. She was as happy and joyous as could be wished. She was even playful of spirit in directing what father was doing for her. She was also seemingly in good physical condition and there was nothing to cause us to anticipate anything untoward to say nothing of any serious change.
Her mother and I left her shortly after noon to go to Piedmont to see the little folks there and give my wife a little change.
Clara Durbrow was with her a short time, leaving her about 2:00 p.m. after a most pleasant visit. Dr. Spaulding had promised she might leave her bed that day for the first time. Shortly before 3:00 p.m. she indicated her desire to do so, and the nurse placed her in her rocking chair. As she was about to move her a few feet from her bedside Edna said “how nice it is to be up again.”
These were her last words, for she immediately fainted and showed no consciousness afterward. Such was the passing away of our darling.
The nurse at once telephoned for her doctor and for your mother. When she reached the home, she in turn telephoned for us and for Nelson to come quickly. She said simply “Edna is very, very sick” and very wisely did so.
We arrived at home about 4:30 only to find our fear realized and later I had to break the sad word to Nelson at Ukiah.
I give you this brief story, as I know you would want us to do so. It may help you to bear the sorrow which will come to you thro’ the decease of her whom you had loved since she became one with you and she was indeed a loving and loveable daughter.
It is not out of place here to tell you how happy you all made her. Father, mother, brothers and sister and wives were all dear to her. She loved each of you and it was her delight to speak of your constant kindness to her.
Dr. Spaulding attributed her sudden decease to a clot of blood on the heart. The embalming however evidenced an unusual quantity of blood for one of her years and very small arteries. This latter fact, if indeed it be fact, will explain her passing away. Such an arterial condition is rare, but is always fatal and it may be her exuberance of feeling only hastened the end.
Baby Eleanor Carlisle is a beautiful baby. Today she is 25 days old and she seems to have grown nicely and well from her birth. We have every reason to believe that she will prove a healthy child.
You will realize our sorrow in this bereavement. It is specially such because of our anticipation of so much happiness these coming months with Edna and Nelson and their baby in our new home which is indeed a pleasing one.
We will endeavor to bear it patiently and in the right spirit. We have many loving words of sympathy from Edna’s companions and friends, younger and older. they are precious to us and will help us. We will have baby Eleanor and you will know what that means to us.
With sorrowful hearts do we send you this. You will grieve with for us and with us, but not I trust as those without hope.
Yours sincerely
R. A. Donaldson6295
